We fixed a wall

The wall that wobbled in the bedroom had 2×4’s that were rotted. That meant replacing them. With that done, we insulated the wall, replaced the window, and now the room is cozy warm and no wobbly wall. image

All this stuff was fixed before we purchased the home and was done before we moved in. It is now only needing flooring, paint and the rest of the inside repair. But it is so worth all we have had done to it before moving in. It was even debated if we should just not do it at all. But with just the minor stuff now left to us to do, I think it will be worth it.

We have a painting party.

We got some pictures of the before and after plus the close up of stucco. We got together and painted some of the rooms so it would be done before we moved in. It made the house smell so much fresher when we were done.

Tillie decided to sit against the wall and got paint on her that I had to wash off and it wasn’t that easy to do by the way.

We had to use the stove for heat until we got the furnace looked at and fixed so it was ready for the oil.

We primed the rooms first and only got the kitchen done.

Of course, you have to have a paint war. Fun is needed when you spend this much time cleaning and painting.

I chose Pumpkin Spice for the kitchen and I love it.

I bought a home

It isn’t a pretty house or even the house of my dreams, but I own it. I have 1 acre of land that is coming with it. It needs work and plenty of TLC but I know we can fix it. We can make it stronger and better than before.

We started with getting the lights turned on and we assessed the house to see what was needed.

When we first came in, we saw the garage.

image

It is a 2 car garage and needs some work. As you can see, it needs a new floor and walls. We have our work cut out for us with this.

image

It is dirty and needs cleaning out. We found the furnace located in the garage. It runs on oil.

We looked in to take a peek through the garage door.

image

We found what we now fondly call the bird room. No insulation, no walls, and really no floor except for subflooring. Man, we are so gonna have to be millionaires to fix this house, but our thought is, a little at a time.

Off the bird room is the rest of the furnace and where the washer and dryer would go. We found a very small water heater and the pumping system for the septic in here as well.

This was the kitchen. It is clean but needed work. It really is a great kitchen. It is about 16-17ft long and 11 1/2ft wide. Not bad.

We found out that the water lines were broken and needed fixing while we were touring the kitchen.

The house has a funky smell in it. Maybe because no one has been in it for a while. A wee bit of history, the last owner committed suicide in the garage to our knowledge. But the house smells like it needs to be aired out and it is very cold. As a matter of fact, it is warmer outside than in the house.

The living room definitely needed new flooring all the walls need painting. The walls are all stucco. I can tell you that is a bitch to paint as well!

image

The living room is the same width and length as the kitchen. It has some wood flooring that was started but then it has this nasty gray/blue carpet left here.

Wait until you see the bedrooms. This house has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. I couldn’t believe it. Once I got into the cleaning and repairing of the home I realized we had to take out a lot of the carpets. They smelled of cat and were moldy. image

image

The first bedroom smelled of cat but can be cleaned. It needs to be painted since someone drew all over the walls. It doesn’t have a closet but someone built a shelf in it.

The second bedroom is interesting. It has built in shelves near the closet.

But as you can see, it is a mess and needs some wall fixing as well as flooring. Again we sigh and know we can take this one room at a time. First though is to clean and really assess what needs to be done NOW.

The third bedroom has a wobbly wall. Not sure as to why. That will have to be fixed and from what we are seeing, we need insulation throughout the house. Could be why it is freezing in here when it is really warm outside.

The bathroom is the size of a walk in closet. It needs work as well and to be cleaned very much.

Overall, this isn’t a bad house and what major work needs to be done is:

1. the furnace needs checking to make sure it will properly work

2. the water lines need replacing.

3. we need to insulate and get walls up

4. we need flooring.

But I think we can do this. I think it will be great. We have an acre to farm on and a house to live in. Yes, it needs work, but if we start this and do it right, it will be excellent.

*This journal entry is from April 20, 2014. I decided to take my entries and post them to get everyone up to date and then just journal the days here instead of in word. I couldn’t start it during the week I thought about it since we were already in the house and didn’t have internet, but that is another story.*
